NeoScale and Luminex Team to Produce Industry's First Direct-to-Tape Solution for Mainframe Tape Encryption
Transparent Data Protection Solution Combines NeoScale CryptoStor™ Storage Security Appliances and Luminex Virtual|BLUE™ 3490 Mainframe Tape Gateway
BOSTON, MA-August 22, 2005-NeoScale Systems Inc., the leading provider of enterprise storage security solutions, and Luminex Software, Inc., a leading developer of mainframe connectivity products, announced today at the SHARE Technology Exchange Expo the industry's first direct-to-tape solution for mainframe tape encryption. Combining NeoScale's CryptoStorT Tape security appliance with Luminex's Virtual|BLUE 3490 mainframe tape gateway, this unique solution natively attaches to a mainframe system and encrypts data stored on tape drives from leading open systems tape vendors. Enterprises using mainframes for business-critical data can confidently rely on this readily encryption tape protection solution to safeguard their mainframe-based data and comply with increased regulations.
Lost or stolen computer tapes have exposed sensitive information on over 6 million people. Data encryption, which offers the most effective solution for protecting tape content in the event of a loss, is best performed in hardware appliances designed to meet enterprise performance and security requirements. The NeoScale-Luminex solution enables mainframe customers to deploy an encryption solution that transparently operates with their existing mainframe backup applications to compress, encrypt, and digitally authenticate tape backups while adding no additional overhead or processing to the mainframe system.
"The combination of NeoScale and Luminex technologies enables mainframe customers to protect the content of their tapes in the event of a breach," explained Dore Rosenblum, vice president of marketing at NeoScale. "With NeoScale storage security appliances, customers can secure their open system and mainframe tape environments without sacrificing performance or adding server complexity."
NeoScale's CryptoStor Tape is a high-speed tape security appliance that compresses, encrypts, and digitally signs data as it goes to tape media or virtual tape-without disrupting backup processes. CryptoStor dynamically intercepts backup/restore communications between the Luminex Virtual|Blue 3490 appliance and open systems tape libraries, centrally managing and fully off-loading tape media security functions. CryptoStor Tape incorporates global key management technology for strong key management and data recovery with the appliance or with a software-only utility, thereby reducing the cost and complexity of deploying a storage security solution.
"The advantage of the Luminex-NeoScale solution is that the Mainframe customer can now encrypt data DIRECTLY to tape," stated Brian Hawley, Luminex's CTO. "VirtualBLUE 3490 writes directly to tape, there are NO extra steps or process changes. The solution is just the next step in Luminex's legacy of technology leadership in being the first to bring state-of-the-art advances into the mainframe storage, archival, distribution and business continuity space. Our solutions provide real value for real-life mainframe and enterprise customer requirements."
The LuminexVirtual|BLUE 3490 mainframe tape gateway natively interfaces with the mainframe backup application and sends mainframe tape content directly to open systems tape drives. It supports two modes of operation: direct mode, to immediately transfer data to tape; and virtual tape mode, to store data for future archiving. Virtual|BLUE 3490 connects to the CryptoStor Tape appliance via a SCSI or Fibre Channel connection.
