Luminex Announces 64-Bit PCI to ESCON Protocol Processor
Virtual|BLUE 6964 Links Open Systems and Mainframes with Universal PCI-X Channel Interface
Riverside, CA-August 4, 2003- Luminex Software, Inc., a leading developer of data distribution, archiving and storage products, today announced that it is now shipping a 64-Bit ESCON protocol processor that provides data transfer directly between mainframe and open system servers at I/O speed. The new product, called Virtual|BLUE 6964, enables the emulation of standard IBM control units without requiring modifications in mainframe applications or utilities. This high performance, easy-to-implement solution is available for use with Luminex emulation software on Microsoft NT/2000, Sun Solaris, Linux and Hewlett Packard systems running HP-UX.
"Luminex is a strategic supplier of mainframe interface technology to many systems integrators and OEMs and we recognize that the industry is rapidly evolving to the 64-bit universal and PCI-X standards," said Michael C. Saunders, President of Luminex. "This product clearly demonstrates our commitment to advancing the ESCON technology, both for our customers and as a strategic component of our own mainframe-attached data storage products. We are the only channel interface vendor to make this mainframe connectivity technology available to systems integrators and OEMs."
With a short form factor, onboard RISC processor and up to four megabytes of memory, the Virtual|BLUE 6964 ESCON protocol processor can transfer data bi-directionally using the full bandwidth of IBM's ESCON fiber-based protocol. The product supports ESCON transfer rates of up to 17 Megabytes/sec and is fully 64-bit PCI compliant.
"With Virtual|BLUE 6964, we expand the number of logical partitions (LPARS) for use with our control unit emulation software-and provide an easy migration path from our Virtual|BLUE 6950 interface for current customers," said Mr. Saunders. "The bottom line is that the Virtual|BLUE 6964 ESCON protocol processor leverages server technology advancements and provides system development functionality that is not available elsewhere.
RT Logic, a developer of satellite telemetry systems, recently upgraded from the Virtual|BLUE 6950 to the Virtual|BLUE 6964 ESCON protocol processor. "The upgrade was straightforward and transparent to our customer," said Randy Culver, President of RT Logic. "The new 6964 allows us to provide ESCON channel-attached solutions in high-availability server class PCs."
Luminex provides a variety of control unit emulation software for Virtual|BLUE 6964. The system-level software is implemented using modular design and loaded to the open system platform with no modifications to mainframe or open system applications. Virtual|BLUE 6964 continues the Luminex philosophy of enabling easy integration between hardware and channel-based applications.
